The 49-year-old beauty - who is mother to socialites Paris and Nicky as well as sons Barron and Conrad - kept her appearance in the Ben Stiller movie a secret from her family, but “raved” about her new co-star when her cameo was finally revealed.
A source said: “She filmed last winter and didn’t even tell her kids because she wanted to surprise them. She raved about Tom, saying he was so warm and friendly and made her very comfortable.”
This is not Kathy’s first acting role. She has also starred in numerous episodes of hit US TV show The Young and the Restless.
Paris is also hoping her acting career will soon take off, after her appearances in horror movie House of Wax and comedy The Hottie and the Nottie were panned by critics worldwide.
Tropic Thunder, which sees white actor Robert Downey Jr. play an African-American man, will be released later this year.

Paris Hilton’s mother doesn’t want her daughter to rush into marriage. Kathy Hilton thinks the ‘Simple Life’ star should take her time to decide whether Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden is the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with, because they have only been together for a short time.
Kathy said: “They’ve only been dating for three months! But he’s such a nice boy and they’re really sweet together. He likes Paris for herself.” Paris recently revealed she thinks Benji is her “perfect match”, saying she has never had such strong feelings for a man.
She said: “He wants to get hitched and we’ve talked about it. I’d wear a beautiful white dress, probably Dolce and Gabbana. “We are the perfect match. We don’t like being apart - we like to stay with each other as much as we can.”

The 27-year-old socialite’s rep said that reports are “completely false.” Rumours started off when she wore a green satin slip-dress to Crown Bar in Los Angeles.
However, Paris admits that she wouldn’t mind having kids. “I love kids, so one day I’ll have some of my own,” Usmagazine.com quoted her as saying. When asked whether she wants children with beau Benji Madden, she replied, “Maybe … we are very in love.

Getting all dolled up in a stunning black dress, Paris Hilton was spotted out on a pharmacy run in Los Angeles on Friday (June 6).
The former Simple Life star was with boyfriend Benji Madden, who picked up some take away food from a local restaurant near Hilton’s home while she popped into the drug store.
According to paparazzi on the scene, “The two were accompanied by a driver and bodyguard, but Paris was in a delightful mood and walked slowly to the car in her elegant dress with her bodyguard walking behind her.”
Ready to head back home, Benji, like a real gentleman, waited by the car door and opened it for her before getting in himself and being driven off.
Later on in the evening, the hotel heiress made her way to TAO, as part of filming for her new MTV reality show Paris Hilton’s My New BFF.
